If you've put off commissioning a website because it's too baffling, here are the only two questions you have to ask yourself.

You might not be a web designer or have any coding skills, but you are an expert on something.
You know more about your own business than anyone else, which means you can commission a top class website.

There are three main types of website:
Simple brochure style
Online shop
Interactive website
and of course there's always something a bit different.

A designer will help guide you through the finer points of design, such as choosing a colour scheme, the right typography to use, and the appropriate icons and buttons to match your business.

The only two things you have to bear in mind are:

1 – What’s it for?

2 – Who’s it for?

Simple brochure style

What’s it for?
A showcase, allowing visitors to view work, pictures, and other information and then get in touch. It's generally for presenting things that are quite specific, that can’t immediately be bought and dispatched

Who’s it for?
People inclined to look - those who window-shop, or who are in the market and are looking for what they need while fishing for prices.

Online shop

What’s it for?
A checkout, for visitors to become customers. For browsing your catalogue, seeing product information, and potentially making a purchase.

Who’s it for?
Your target market, ie: whoever your product suits.
Example: If you make baby clothes – people with children in their lives who they care about.

Website with interactive features

Whats it for?
Engaging visitors with your content. Standing out by being characterful. Creating a sense of movement and energy.
Eg: a portfolio of campaigns or performances.

Who’s it for?
An audience. Either who are familiar with you and are interested to see what you’re doing currently, or newcomers who you want to break the ice with quickly, and introduce yourself.

Something else

What is it?
Either you do or do not know exactly, but it’s not easy to categorse. But you may need a web designer to consult and help conceive the idea, as well as build the website.

Who’s it for?
The website may not fit into easy categories, but once you identify who it’s for you you will be able to build the website more easily.
